Experimental Short Video Collection, 2021
As Taiwan’s COVID-19 alert escalated to Level 3 in May 2021, Selv and June began a video diary exchange that would evolve into a dialogue about daily life through the lens. From the
banalities of life in lockdown to personal struggles, this collection of six video diaries is not
just a record of the pandemic but an exploration of self-identity.
I remember once having this conversation with an artist friend: “Words are a medium with
clear meanings and are easy to read and understand. But do you feel bound or restricted
creatively?
“I actually feel words are flexible. …Sometimes I feel that after writing something, it needs to
be read and imagined before it is complete,” she replied.
Perhaps this is also how we tilt our heads and try to understand each other in our
conversations. If unable to be reached by language or words, we move forward with a
different method, tossing away and picking up moments that come and go, both privately
and publicly. In the gaps between images and the scenes of our conversations, it is what
cannot be reached or is lacking that make our existence more complete.
